Changing Things Around
Every now and then...
...I think about new year’s resolutions.
It’s the last three months of the year. We’re getting the warmer layers out, advent calendars are in the shops and before we know it, a new year will be upon us.
And I am wondering, what if we were to start our “New Year, New Me” resolutions on 1st October instead of waiting for January 2025?
We’d have a head start, we’d experience the most difficult part of sticking to our new plan before it’s too dark and too cold to make the uncomfortable choices that often come with creating change, and New Year’s Eve can be our big celebration of our progress so far. :)
I know, it might sound crazy, and you might not seem intrigued by this at all and that’s fine.
Personally, I just think that January does not lend itself to stepping into the discomfort of the unfamiliar when we have about 4 hours of daylight, it’s miserable outside and we’re recovering from December’s events.
I find the thought of making the most of the next three months towards the end of the year much more inspiring while the trees are changing colour and letting go of the old in preparation for the new in a few months’ time.
My question to you would be IF you were to start a new habit, a new project, a new adventure on 1st October, what would that be?
Prompts to ponder:
What are a few successful changes that you have made over the years?
What inspired you to start and what motivated you to keep going?
How do you usually feel in January? Ready to change your life or in hibernation mode?
What would be the ONE thing that you feel would make all the difference in staying on course in a new endeavour?
A penny, or two, for your thoughts :)

January - yes, it can feel like a bit of a low point, and maybe that's to do, as you say, with the lack of light. I think I often feel quite motivated at this time of year though, after the summer (which, even if not restful, has usually been different), new term feeling perhaps. I'm thinking now about a significant work/life change (going back to studying) and although I haven't made a final decision I'm finding the process of deciding a positive one. If I go for it, it will be a very large resolution, and what would keep me on course? The support of family and friends I think.
I’m always on
No chips in October ( the summer holidays seem very chip heavy)
No Mince pie November ( I like to wait till at least December )
And my favourite is
I will not get caught up in the hysteria of the festive pressure ( not nailed that one yet)
From tomorrow I want to stretch more
My Pilates teacher recommends start with a simple stretch and see if you want to do more, so I’m going to give it a try 😊.
